You lean in close to the mirror and there they are. Fine red lines branching across the sides of your nose, a few more on your cheeks. Or maybe it's not lines at all, just a face that always looks a bit flushed, even when you're calm. Concealer covers some of it. Not all. These are spider veins, sometimes called thread veins or broken capillaries, and they're very common. They're harmless, but they can make your skin look red, tired or irritated all the time. At Dadu Medical Centre, a skin clinic in Delhi with centres in Vasant Vihar and Rajouri Garden, spider veins treatment uses IPL to fade those vessels and calm the redness. Dr. Nivedita Dadu and her team plan the sessions around your skin.
Spider veins are tiny blood vessels sitting just under the skin's surface that have widened and become visible. On the face they usually look like thin red or purplish lines, sometimes branching out like a small web, which is where the name comes from.
Some people have just a few clear lines. Others have a more general flush or blotchy redness, where lots of tiny vessels sit close together. Spider veins don't hurt and they're not a sign of anything serious. They don't usually fade on their own, though, and new ones can keep appearing over the years, so most people choose to treat them for how they look and how they make them feel.
Usually it's a few things working together over time.
You can't always stop new ones from forming, but these habits help.
Sunscreen every day. It protects both the skin and the vessels underneath.
Keep water lukewarm when you wash your face.
Step back from heat when you can, and skip the sauna if you flush easily.
Go easy on alcohol. Notice whether it makes your face go red.
Be gentle with your skin. No hard scrubbing.
Don't use steroid creams on your face unless a doctor has prescribed them.
Get rosacea or frequent flushing treated early, before more vessels stay open.
Treat spider veins sooner rather than later. Fewer, finer vessels usually clear faster.
short, strong pulses of light that heat the tiny dilated vessels under the skin. The vessels shrink and fade, and the body clears them away over the following weeks. It works on spider veins, thread veins, flushing and general facial redness.
a calming session for red, reactive skin, useful alongside IPL when there's a lot of overall redness.

Redness on the face isn't always just spider veins. Sometimes it's rosacea, sometimes it's skin irritated by the wrong products, and each of those needs a different approach. At Dadu Medical Centre, our doctors first look at what's behind your redness before deciding on IPL. Dr. Nivedita Dadu and her team then set the treatment for your skin type, which matters on Indian skin so the area around the veins doesn't darken. You'll know roughly how many sessions to expect and what to do between them, and the plan is adjusted as your skin responds. Treatment is available at both our Vasant Vihar and Rajouri Garden centres.
