Well, we all know that pandas are cute, but we still don’t wish to look like a human version of them because of our dark circles. The skin under our eyes is one of the thinnest layers of skin cells. This is a delicate area, and it also shows the blood vessels under it, making it look a little more pigmented than skin on other parts of our face. Various factors including stress, excess screen time, dehydration, and the effects of ageing damage our under eye skin further. Many use expensive under eye creams to treat dark circles, yet they barely move!

To find a complete and effective step-by-step routine focusing on clearing our under eyes pigmentation, here are some insights from Dr. Nivedita Dadu, who is the founder and chairman of Dadu Medical Centre and a leading dermatologist in Delhi (Vasant Vihar, Rajouri Garden).

“With age the under eye area starts losing fat and collagen underneath the eyes is normal with age. It results in our skin showing dark blood cells. Thus, not just a morning routine, you will also need to follow an effective night time skincare routine. To get rid of dark circles, there are several treatment options available such as cosmetics, treatment procedures such as chemical peeling, laser surfacing, etc. But few home remedies for dark circles done on a regular basis can also be helpful,” says Dr. Nivedita Dadu.

Here are six tips to cure dark circles at home:

1. Type of Makeup
If you have dark circles, then using waterproof eye makeup is a big no. The motive is not to damage the thin eye area or rub the skin needlessly while removing the waterproof mascaras and long-lasting eye pencils or kajal. Instead, using a creamy concealer and setting powder is advisable to avoid extensive rubbing at the time of removing them.

2. Cleansing
The best skin doctor in Delhi, Dr. Nivedita Dadu, suggests, “Before going to bed it’s very important to remove all the makeup to clear the under eye area. No matter how tired you are, make this a habit of always removing makeup properly from the under eye area. As the skin around the eyes is very delicate and is prone to get harmed, use a gentle oil-based cleanser.” She suggests that you can also rub 4 drops of almond oil to remove the makeup from the under eyes. Then, after that, apply a foaming cleanser that’s tearless and gentle on the eyes,”.

3. Cold Compress
Cold compress works wonderfully for treating dark circles under the eyes. Applying a cold compress for almost 10 minutes to the under eye area will soothe the skin. If you use an eye mask or ice globes, refrigerate them for a while before applying them to your under eyes to comfort the area. You can also make this cold compress on your own, just crush some ice and wrap them in a muslin cloth and it would be ready to use. Persistent use of this will reduce the dark patches under the eyes.

4. Eye Serum
Use an eye serum that contains caffeine. Caffeine is known for reducing under eye pigmentation and also lessens the visibility of blue swelled-up nerves under the eye, which gives our eyes a dark appearance. Take 2-3 drops of this caffeinated serum and tap it gently on the eyes. If needed, you can also make your own serum by using coffee grounds, aloe vera gel, and 1 tsp of rose water. Mix all these ingredients together and let it sit overnight. Strain it using a fine cloth and collect it into a dropper bottle. This serum will be good to use for 15 days when stored in a refrigerator. Apply it during your bedtime; this will work wonders to treat your dark circles.

5. Cold Milk Patches
For making these patches, take two cotton pads and dip them in cold milk. Then apply these cold milk patches on your skin and let it rest for 5-6 minutes. The lactic acid in milk works as a mild exfoliator that’s perfect for the under eye area. That’s why regular use of cold milk will not only treat dark circles but also soothe and moisturize the skin. The moisturizing properties of milk act as a hydrator for delicate skin.

6. Eye massage
The last step to finish off this night skincare routine is a gentle eye massage. For massage, use a mixture of coconut oil, almond oil, and a vitamin E capsule. Take this mixture in your hands, rub it and then start massaging it gently in a circular motion around the eyes from inwards to outwards direction. Leave it on overnight.

This complete procedure should be followed stepwise, and the best skin doctor in Delhi also advises that the steps should be followed in the given chronology, and no step should be skipped. She also suggests that to get good results, one should use this process daily to treat dark circles.

Remember, a good sleep schedule is as crucial as a skincare routine. It’s just not a random saying that beauty sleep is necessary, but it really is important as our skin also needs some rest to provide us a radiant glow. So, try to sleep on time every day and have a good 8 hours of sleep. Follow this routine for a month, and you will be amazed to see that your dark circles will start fading away.
