Dandruff

Dandruff is a common flaky scalp condition in which small pieces of dry skin flake off of the scalp. If one is having dark hair or is wearing dark colored clothes, they can notice the dry flakes in their hair or on their shoulders. This flaky scalp condition may also make the scalp itchy, sensitive, and dry.

This condition could appear due to the dryness of the scalp or due to excessive production of oil on the scalp. This scalp problem is not contagious or infectious but is a cosmetic concern for many people.

Many people believe that dandruff is caused by poor hygiene, but this is not the only reason. Infrequent shampooing can make dandruff worse; hence take the help of a dermatologist to cure the problem effectively.

Dandruff is an embarrassing skin problem
Dandruff is a sign that the skin of the scalp is peeling off. It is perfectly normal for the skin to exfoliate. The condition is harmless, but it can be embarrassing and inconvenient. Most people experience dandruff at some point of their life, but it is more common in teenage years to midlife.

The most common underlying reason for dandruff is dry scalp resulting from dry air. Not doing shampoo at frequent intervals can let dandruff gather on the scalp. Flakes may be more visible if a person does not wash or brush their hair often. The problem arises when the amount of dandruff becomes an eyesore. The other possible cause of dandruff include inflammatory diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, allergic reactions, psoriasis, and eczema

Symptoms
Dandruff itself produces no symptoms. However, the most common symptom of extreme dandruff is an itchy red rash that tends to occur on the scalp, ears, face, mid-chest, and mid-back.  If dandruff and itching are severe and persistent, or if symptoms worsen, it is important to contact a doctor. For mild dandruff without a specific cause, various over-the-counter products can help manage flaking and itchiness.

Steps for managing dandruff

  • The first step is to brush the hair and use a dandruff shampoo. Brush the hair from the scalp down with steady, firm strokes. This carries the oil away from the scalp, where the build-up of it and skin cells can cause dandruff. Moving it along the hair strands helps keep the hair shiny and healthy.
  • The patient can wash the hair every other day with a over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo. Look for the ingredients on the label such as (a) salicylic acid, which can help eliminate scaling; (b) ketoc-onaz-ole shampoo is intended to kill dandruff-causing fungi that live on the scalp; (c) sulfur shampoo contain an antifungal agent. Use these products as directed by the doctor and rinse well after shampooing, as they can dehydrate the hair and scalp.
  • Massage a small amount of these shampoos into the scalp. Do not scrub. Leave the shampoo in for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Any leftover shampoo may irritate the skin. So rinse the shampoo effectively.
  • There are many more different dandruff shampoos, and each contains different active ingredients for controlling symptoms. Always follow the instructions as directed by the doctor. Some products need to be left on for a few minutes, while others should be rinsed off quickly.
  • If using one dandruff shampoo does not bring relief, try alternating between dandruff shampoos with different active ingredients. Rotate the anti-dandruff shampoo with a regular moisturizing one to avoid getting a dry scalp.

For most people, dandruff does not require medical attention. Sometimes even the best anti-dandruff shampoo won’t get rid of a stubborn case. However, if the flaking and itching appear like dandruff then it could be a sign of a medical condition like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp fungal infections, or eczema. Then a proper diagnosis and management with  appropriate cream, lotion, or solution are prescribed to the affected area once or twice daily.

Dr. Nivedita Dadu aside from dandruff shampoos, also suggests a few other things that may help control it such as managing the stress could help with flaking or the candidate might try some natural treatments such as coconut oil, aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, and olive oil. It is also recommended that tea tree oil may help with dandruff however in some cases, it can irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction so the home remedies should be done with caution.

The person may also need an anti-fungal medicine that is taken orally or applied to the scalp or skin to get rid of the yeast.

Apart from the medications there are treatments available in the clinical which involves physical cleansing of the scalp with serums and multiple sessions of this may aid faster relief from scalp dandruff.
